When you’re on a shared server it’s important to find out if anyone else on your server has been blacklisted for spamming.
Why?
Because on a shared server you’re IP address and their IP address will be the same, and it does not matter if your domain name is different, you’ll still be blacklisted along with every other person on that server.
If you’re building an email list this will affect how your email gets handled by the major ISP… probably banned.
One way to check and make sure you’re not getting blacklisted is to look up your IP address that your site is hosted on here:
http://www.mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx?AG=GBL
That will tell you what’s going on with your shared server. If it’s got a lot of listings you might want to find a another host before attempting to build an email list.

1Hello Dave,
Thanks, this is useful info. I wonder if there is any way to find out any of this before signing up with a host?
Or is one stuck not able to find out til after signing up.
Thanks
Mark

2Dave, there is actually a more helpful site you can use for this blacklisting enquiry.
http://www.dnsstuff.com/tools/ip4r.ch?ip=
Why is it better? It tells you which negative results you can ignore. And why. For example…
“# NEVER BLOCK WITH: BLARSBL, FIVETENIGNORE, FIVETENSRC, JAMMDNSBL, SPAMBAG, SPEWS (these block large IP ranges)
# NEVER BLOCK WITH: MAPS-DUL, SORBS-DUHL (these knowingly list IPs that do not meet listing criteria).”
Gary
PS: I’m in your new EMI group. Thanks for sharing it!

3Hi Mark,
Just ask them, if you do sign up, what the shared IP address will be. If they can’t tell you, do a lookup on whois.sc for the block of IP’s that the host uses and do a search on the IP block.
Hope that helps,
-Dave
